Brisbane: Queensland’s Most Sustainable City

The Lord Mayor received the sustainability award while opening Brisbane’s latest recycling initiative at the Ferny Grove Waste Transfer Station.

Graham Quirk, Lord Mayor: “It’s a great honour for Brisbane people and it’s a fact that they have been a part of this whole process. Council can simply create a lead it’s up to the people of Brisbane to then get in behind it.”

Among the city’s green practices praised by judges the council’s low emission bus fleet, a Recycle Art competition and the better Bikeways Program.

Ashley Curwen, Keep Queensland Beautiful: “At the moment Brisbane City is Australia’s single largest purchaser of 100% green energy.”

Brisbane is now in the running to retain its title as Australia’s most Sustainable City.

Ashley Curwen, Keep Queensland Beautiful: “I think Brisbane is a good place to achieve, to come into the top 20 world ranking.”

Australia’s national awards will be held in Brisbane next month.
