Rough Night To Be Homeless

Rough Night To Be Homeless

Almost 30 local residents, community members and business leaders will discard their usual comforts and sleep rough for Brisbane’s West Community Sleepout on Monday.

The inaugural event at the GPS Rugby Club at Ashgrove mirrors The Vinnies CEO Sleepout, but aims to highlight homelessness in the western suburbs.

St Vinnies Rosalie presidents Chris Cahill said the event was a unique way to raise awareness and funds in support of essential services for the homeless.

“People don’t realise that homelessness is an issue even in communities that are though of as affluent,” Mr Cahill said.

“Our main goal is to assist them and protect them from going back out onto the streets.”

Participants include Greens state director Kitty Carra, Payne Road State School principal Helen Henrich, Father Stanley Orji from the Jubilee Catholic Parish and business representatives.

The group has raised more than $12,800.
