The annual turtle season has begun on the Sunshine Coast – with an endangered loggerhead turtle laying her eggs at Point Cartright.
Up to 100 green and endangered loggerhead turtles nest on local beaches each year.
Sunshine Coast Council Conservation Officer Kate Hofmeister says volunteers have already covered the nest with mesh to protect the eggs from predatory foxes.
Kate Hofmeister: “We have around 140 volunteers on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast and for our volunteers this is a really important time because it’s exciting for them. It means that they’re motivated and ready to be out on the beach every single day from here until around March.”
